Most sensitive souls love poetry as do I. I’m not trained in poetry, but my former colleague from Ogilvy had studied poetry in the US and graduated in the subject. There was a time when poems had a rigid structure, but over the decades, they have become more free-flowing and convey a spontaneous outpouring of emotions.
Today, insta poets, such as Rupi Kaur and Lang Leav have a huge following. I’ve read Rupi Kaur’s ‘The sun and its flowers’ and ‘Milk and Honey’. I’ve also read Lang Leav’s ‘The Universe of Us’. I enjoyed them in parts. A friend of mine loves Mary Oliver’s poems. I own and have read Mary Oliver’s ‘A poetry handbook,’ which is a slim volume that explains basic terms in poetry. I’ve also read Sharanya Manivannan’s ‘The altar of an only world.’ I enjoyed the book for its rich imagery, creative use of vocabulary, and sheer sense of poetry it conveyed. I’ve enjoyed Rilke’s poetry in 2014. ‘The Essential Rumi’ with a translation by Coleman Barks was another book on poetry I read a couple of years ago, but I almost enjoyed Coleman Barks’ explanations better than the actual poems of Rumi.
On my TBR is Pablo Neruda’s poetry and Vikram Seth’s book of poems, which lies unread on my bookshelf.
There are a lot of ‘how-to’ books on writing poetry. I’ve read a few of them. For me, writing poetry is cathartic.
Facebook groups, such as ‘Penmancy’ come up with contests for new poets almost every week. Several literary magazines accept poetry across the world. There are several Facebook groups that announce a call for submissions and one can submit one’s work via a submission tool called Submittable.
So far, four of my poems have been published on Spillwords, a popular international online magazine. You can read them here.
Do let me know what you think. It would be great if you could leave a comment with your thoughts. Also, I would be thrilled if you could rate them on Spillwords. They have a five-star rating system. I would appreciate your feedback. I encourage you to delve deep into yourself and write that poem!
It's interesting to know that poetry is still kicking around in our highly prosaic world.
ReplyDeleteThis is the second post where people have written about poetry and I must say poetry is an elegant way to say something and I would prefer a poetry over a story any day. It is much more expressive and has the ability to express feelings. Happy A2Zing, Aishwarya.
